In the south western Chinese province of YunNan, in the regional capital city of Kunming, four young musicians formed a band; Xi Shan, so they can write songs to express the harsh realities which surround them. They chose the protest genre of rap/hip hop as their creative vehicle, measuring up cool grooves, incorporating traditional instruments into their sound pool, they laced their lyrics with humour, satire and side swipe digs at a wide range of topics; social, emotional and political. Most uniquely, they made the decision to rap in their own Kunming dialect, a move frawned upon by the Central authorities in far away Beijing. They recorded several demo tracks looking for a record deal but were ignored by all the record companies in the PRC due to its 'risque' nature and the band's career stalled. Then well known Taiwanese A&R person, song lyrist and producer Julian Yu discovered them in 2007. Julian understood the band's credibility, recognized their true creative agenda and decided that he needed to bring the band's story to the attention of the world in order for them to gain their due respect in China. Across the last few months of 2008 and February 2009, Julian spent the entire period working with the band, shooting endless reels of HD film footage and now, with over 44 hours of usable film impressions as well as a 15 track CD, the real journey for the band and Julian has just began. In the pipeline there are 5 music clips, a dozen of so YouTube show-reels and, most importantly, a compelling feature length documentary about the band; "Say Sing', all of which are now being spliced together in a Taipei editing suite. CS Amsterdam flashmobbed door Aziaten 31 maart, Amsterdam -- Het stationsplein van Centraal Station Amsterdam werd vandaag om 14.30 opgeschrikt door luide Aziatische hiphop. "Yeah, I'm Chinese...and what?!" schalt uit de speakers van een boombox, die plotseling op het plein staat. Te midden van de verbaasde reizigers begint opeens een groep Aziaten te hiphoppen. De aanstekelijke flashmob wordt aangevoerd door So you think you can dance?-deelneemster Julia Mitomi. Wie dacht er dat Aziaten niet kunnen dansen? Na de Asian flashmob gingen de dansers op in de mensenmassa en keerde de rust weer op het plein. De dansgroep bestond uit vrijwilligers van het CinemAsia Film Festival 2012, dat van 4 tot en met 8 april plaatsvindt in De Balie in Amsterdam. Het filmfestival wordt georganiseerd door mensen met Aziatische roots, die de zichtbaarheid van de Aziatische gemeenschap willen bevorderen en haar diversiteit willen benadrukken. Het thema van CinemAsia is dit jaar 'Beyond the stereotype'. De flashmob werd georganiseerd in samenwerking met ASN TV.

Op 31 maart hebben als stunt een Flashmob bedacht met Julia Mitomi (So You Think You Can Dance) als choreograaf. Hieraan deden 20+ dansers mee die het leuk vonden om samen mee te werken aan deze stunt. Ter promotie van het filmfestival van 4-8 april bij theater "De Bali" in Amsterdam organiseerde ASN en Cinemasia een Flashmob. Ongeveer 20-25 dansers werden opgetrommeld om te gaan dansen op een choreografie bedacht door Julia Mitomi bekend van So You Think You Can Dance. Zwarte Cross Lied 2009 Jovink met Hanggai! Zwarte Cross 2009 - sommige valt steeds in herhaling as ze wat gedronken heb. De Chinees-Mongoolse band Hanggai valt niet in een hokje te plaatsen: Hanggai brengt een unieke combinatie van rockmuziek met traditionele Mongoolse volksmuziek en keelzang. Naast opvallendste verschijning op Lowlands 2009, stond de band in datzelfde jaar samen met Jovink en de Voederbietels op het podium van de Zwarte Cross, waarbij het nummer Jiu Ge (Dranklied) werd omgedoopt tot het Zwarte Cross Lied 2009. Volgens voormalig punkmuzikant en voorman Ilchi laat de band zich inspireren door Westerse artiesten als Radiohead, Pink Floyd, Rage Against the Machine en Neil Diamond. Hanggai ontstond toen de voormalige punkmuzikant Ilchi uit Beijing op zoek ging naar zijn roots in Mongolië en op het conservatorium van Ulaanbaatar belandde. Daar kwam hij in aanraking met keelzang en Mongoolse instrumenten als de morin khuur (een tweesnarige viool) en de tobshuur (een Mongoolse luit). Met de twee traditionele muzikanten Hugejiltu en Bagen startte Ilchi Hanggai. Terug in Peking werd de groep uitgebreid tot een vijfmansformatie. Hanggai gebruikt niet alleen traditionele instrumenten. Op het album Introducing Hanggai, dat medio 2008 verscheen, waren tevens elektrische gitaren en banjos te horen en werd gebruikgemaakt van computers. In 2010 bracht de band hun tweede CD ‘He who travels far’ uit. Deze plaat werd opgenomen in Beijing en geproduceerd door JB Meijers (De Dijk) en Ken Stringfellow (Neil Young, R.E.M.). Beide heren voelden naadloos de ontwikkeling aan die Hanggai het jaar daarvoor had doorgemaakt en zorgden voor een prachtige productie die goed het live gevoel van de concerten weergeeft. Hanggai was de laatste jaren op de meest uiteenlopende festivals te bewonderen, van wereldmuziekfestivals als Womad tot aan het mega heavy metal festival Wacken Open Air. Waar ze ook optreden, Hanggai maakt steevast een onvergetelijke indruk op het publiek.
